“I couldn’t thank Home-start enough, when I was at my lowest and needed the most support, I had you to rely on. The support from my volunteer and the Home-start team has been fantastic, just a simple chat or a walk can instantly make you feel better about yourself or change your way of thinking. They have always been great with my little girl when I was having up and down days. Thank you to all the team, you are incredible.”

Home-Start Trafford, Salford, Wigan

Working in local communities since 1998, Home-Start Trafford, Salford, Wigan currently supports families across Trafford, Salford and Wigan and are part of a Greater Manchester project that enables them to support some families in Wigan and Leigh, with the hope for future expansion to run a full service there.

All Home-Starts offer locally trained parent volunteers to provide emotional and practical support to families in their own homes. However each individual Home-Start offers a range of additional services/support groups and activities for parents and their children.

Family Support Workers
Now in all 3 areas (funded through People’s postcode lottery, Trafford council, and Henry Smiths), Our FSW’s will provide a rapid response to families who are already in crisis or close to reaching crisis point, offering practical support tailored to the immediate needs of each individual family. The length and intensity of support will vary according to need, but we expect that our FSW will typically spend up to 40 hours with each family over a period of 4 months. Once the family’s immediate needs have been met, we can then continue to offer weekly volunteer support so that positive outcomes can be sustained. Our FSW will agree a tailored package of practical support with each family to relieve any immediate crisis. Initial ‘rapid response’ support will focus on meeting the families most urgent needs and may include:

– helping families access appropriate housing and obtaining essential household items

– helping families access appropriate benefits and manage a household budget

– ensuring families have enough to eat through issuing food bank vouchers

School Readiness
(funding through Trafford Housing Trust)
We want to make sure that children in Trafford, Salford and Wigan start school ready to learn by supporting parents of children who are falling behind in their pre-school speech and language checks to make positive and sustained improvements in the home learning environment. We have trained two of our Coordinators to become Specialist School Readiness Coordinators, they are creating and then delivering enhanced school readiness/early language development training, providing ongoing support and additional resources to our new and existing home-visiting volunteers, as well as offering more intensive support and school readiness resource packs to targeted families.

Trafford Early Help Contract
Although this is a combination of our core coordinated volunteer support and FSW – it is a whole family approach, for families with the following targeted needs – poverty & debt, isolated as result of cultural differences, family member in prison or at risk of imprisonment, mental health, and domestic abuse. It is available for families resident in Trafford with children aged 0 to 19.
